Margaret Camden Mays

Born January 6, 1918 in Amherst County, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Bransford Camden and Maggie Raikes Camden. She was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, John Pershing Mays and their daughter, Margaret Ellen Mays Mays, and four sisters and five brothers. Mrs. Mays was a graduate of Madison Heights High School and Phillips Business College.

Margaret was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother who served her family tirelessly. She was a faithful member of the Amelon United Methodist Church, the Seven Hills Depression Glass Club, and the Rebekah Lodge #22 where she had served as a Noble Grand. Due to failing health she spent the past four years at Westminster Canterbury.

She is survived by her sister Louise C. Barnes of Longmont CO; two sons, Donald L. Mays and his wife Joanie of Gilroy, CA and David L. Mays & his wife Jean of Lynchburg; her son-in-law, Claude W. Mays of Forest; seven grandchildren, Brian E Mays, Cathy M. Patrick, Scott Mays, Jennifer Mays, Rebecca Mays, Carolyn Mays, and John Mays, and three great grandchildren, Nathan Patrick, Josie Mays, and Elodie Mays.

The family would like to express their appreciation for the loving care provided by the staff of Westminster Canterbury and Senior Independence Hospice, and two faithful friends, Jean Mays & Lourine Massie who provided weekly visits to serve and uplift Margaret’s spirit.

A service celebrating Margaret’s life will be conducted on Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Whitten Monelison Chapel with the Rev. Kristi Miles officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

A family visitation will be held at the funeral home from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM on Monday, January 19th.
