

Marvin is survived by his wife, Marilyn Gilbert of Amherst and his sister Elora Wiley and her husband Robert of Dublin.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lona Gregory Gilbert and Eugene Daniel Gilbert.
Marvin who graduated from Lynchburg College with a degree in Education, taught in Amherst County Schools for 28 years; first at Phelps Road School and then at Monelison Middle School. At Monelison Middle School, he taught 6th and 7th grade math and science. It is there that Marvin met and married Marilyn Flynn who taught science. They were happily married for thirty one years. Marvin loved hunting and fishing. He was an accomplished fly fisherman and fly tyer, and a founding member of the Skyline Chapter of Trout Unlimited. He was a generous individual who loved sharing his talents with young and old alike. Marvin was a passionate conservationist and generously gave his time working on stream improvement and collecting water samples for the Virginia Trout Stream Sensitivity Study being done by the University of Virginia, Department of Environmental Sciences. Although he was not Catholic, he faithfully attended St. Francis of Assisi church with this wife.
A Mass of Christian burial will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, January 3, 2019 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Amherst with Fr. Carlos Lerma officiating. Marvin’s ashes will be inurned in the church columbarium following the Mass, and a reception will follow in the church hall. All are welcome to attend.
