She never met a stranger and if you were one, you probably didn’t stay one for long. She never allowed a challenge to get the best of her. Bright, vibrant, loving, and considerate, Mary A.Thomas (Mimi) genuinely enjoyed people. She could strike up a conversation almost anywhere, loved a good laugh, and had a way of making those around her feel included.
Lovingly cared for by her grandmother, Mrs. Virginia Goode, Mary grew up in Amherst County and was an Amherst County Lancer. Creativity came naturally to her. Multi-talented person. She was an artist and painter, a wonderful cook, and a gardener. She loved fishing, traveling, entertaining at home, and spending time with those closest to her. Her beloved kittens, Cash and Dash, were never far away.
Mary earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Safe Haven in North Carolina. Completing her master’s was especially meaningful and brought her great excitement.
Her love for the Lord was deeply rooted in who she was. While living in Minnesota, Mary joined El Bethel Church under the leadership of Pastor William and Bernice Gillard. She helped establish ministries supporting the transient community and a food pantry for those in need. She also sang in the choir, started Bible Study groups, led vacation Bible School and served as an usher, always finding meaningful ways to put her faith into action.
Mary eventually made her way back to Virginia and continued with her ministry work. She treasured being close again, enjoying worshipping the Lord God Almighty, fishing, barbeques at her home, and the everyday moments that came with having those she loved nearby.
Mary will be deeply missed by her parents, Clarence & Mable Wesley and Butch Thomas; her siblings, Thomas, Angela (Anthony), and La-Teshette (Wardell); nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family, church family, and dear friends.
What a gift it was to know her, to laugh with her, and to have shared a part of her story. Please join us in celebrating Mary, cherishing treasured memories and giving thanks to God for the blessing of her life.
“Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing.”
