

Born in Amherst, July 19, 1933, she was a daughter of the late Irby Taliaferro Cash and Gracie Lillian Campbell Cash. Mattie was a graduate of Temperance High School class of 1949 and later graduated from Phillips Business College. She was a retired Magistrate for the 24th Judicial District primarily serving Amherst and Nelson Counties for over 28 years and prior to that served as a Justice of the Peace. She was a past secretary of the Virginia Magistrates Association, past President of the Amherst Junior Woman’s Club and past member of the GFWC Amherst Woman’s Club. She was a member of Sardis United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Edith C. Lawhorne and Dorothy C. Davis and one brother, Irby Ray Cash and the father of her children, J. Daniel D. Burley.
She is survived by one daughter, Wanda Louise Burley of Amherst and one son, James Dwayne “J.D.” Burley of Amherst; one brother –in-law, Ross Burley and his wife Gladys; three sisters-in-law, Russelle Pillow, Kitty Meredith and Roberta Burley and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
A service celebrating her life will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Monday, January 5, 2015 at Whitten Monelison Chapel with the Rev. Shin Hong and the Rev. Randy Harlow officiating. Interment will follow in Amherst Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, January 4, 2015 at Whitten Monelison Chapel.
