Michael “Mike” Grant Walker, 71, of Amherst passed away on Friday, July 24, 2026, at UVA in Charlottesville, VA. Through a tough fight with cancer, he remained in high spirits and always looked at life from a "glass half full" perspective.
He was born on July 30, 1954, in Lynchburg, the son of the late Rufus Beverly Walker and the late Louise Baldwin Walker. Mike attended Amherst County High School and graduated in the Class of 1972. He maintained friendships with many of his childhood classmates and truly cherished those lifelong relationships.
Mike grew up in Madison Heights but spent most of his childhood on his father's farm in Amherst. He spent many a day cutting hay or pulpwood, or putting up fences. He worked hard to maintain Rufus' legacy and would talk fondly of his childhood memories. Mike was a true farmer at heart. A special thank you to Timmy Campbell, who was there anytime Mike called.
In July 1975, Mike married the love of his life, Gloria Cook Walker. They were married over 45 years. His love and dedication to her knew no bounds, and he cared for her until her passing in March 2022.
Mike served proudly as a Captain of the RR Donnelly Fire Brigade before retiring after over 40 years with the company. During his time at Meredith-Burda/Donnelly, he made many friends, including his best buddy/fishing partner Johnny Bowling. He loved spending time with "Bowling" and loved him like a brother. He was also a member of the Massies Mill Ruritan Club and so enjoyed working different events and spending time with all of the members. He especially loved car shows and taking his 1967 Chevelle to them. During his battle with cancer, it was one of the things that brought his heart true joy.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Christie W. Crouch and her husband Daryl of Forest; a son, Chad Walker of Amherst; his biological mother, Sallie DeHart; six brothers and sisters, Michelle Lapenna, John Dehart, Wade Dehart, Luke Dehart, Simone Evans, Lisa Lindsey; as well as his beloved grandchildren, Fern, Atlas, and Ellison. He was an amazing Pop Pop and was incredibly proud of his family. Mike was an amazing man and loved by so many.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 5, 2026 from 6-8 pm at Whitten Monelison Chapel.
A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, August 6, 2026 at Whitten Monelison Chapel with Pastor Johnny Eagle officiating. Burial will follow at Briarwood Memorial Gardens.
