Raymond Glen “Ray” Hicks, Sr., 92, of Madison Heights, passed away Saturday, March 12, 2011 at Virginia Baptist Hospital. He is survived by his devoted wife of sixty-five years, Eleanor Sale Hicks.
Born November 29, 1918 in Amherst County, he was the son of the late William Glen and Mamie Harris Hicks and was also preceded in death by his son, Raymond Glen Hicks, Jr.; a sister, Evelyne H. Valentine and a brother, William H. Hicks. He was a retired meat cutter with Madison Square Market, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of Amelon United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife, Ray is survived by his daughter, Sharon H. Tomlin and husband, Ed of Amherst; four grandchildren, Vanessa H. Fox and husband, Chuck of Forest, Jennifer R. Tuggle and husband, Barry of Amherst, Christy T. Hurley and husband, Mark of Madison Heights, and Amanda T. Davis and husband, Mark of Amherst and seven great-grandchildren, Olivia Fox, Cameron Fox, Hunter Hurley, Parker Hurley, Claire Tuggle, Colby Davis, and Cayla Davis.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at Briarwood Memorial Gardens in Amherst with the Rev. George McGann officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m., Monday, March 14, 2011 at Whitten Monelison Chapel and other times at the residence.
