

Richard Mortimer Bailey, 89, of Amherst, went to be with our Lord and Savior on Tuesday, March 22, 2017. He was the last remaining child of the late Richard Melvin Bailey and Lila Fields Bailey and the family circle is now complete in heaven.
Richard was born on August 16, 1927 in Nelson County. He served our country in the United States Army and was WWII Veteran where he was stationed in Frankfort, Germany. He retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. Richard loved the Lord, thanking and praising him everyday. He loved fellowship and visits with many churches. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a great granddaughter, Amanda Bailey; great grandson, Christopher Seals-McDaniel; brothers, William Bailey, Dewey Bailey, and Newton Bailey; and sisters, Hazel Hewitt, Patricia Reid, Paige Lane, and Elizabeth Gravely.
Richard leaves to cherish his memory, daughters, Linda B. McDaniel and Brenda B. Hudson; sons, Richard L. “John” Bailey (Debbie) and James M. Bailey; six grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and special and loving companion and caregiver, Dorothy Sandifer.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 pm on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at St. Stephens Baptist Church, 2903 Tye River Rd, Amherst, VA 24521, with Rev. Mickey Ryan officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery with military honors presented by the American Legion Post 16. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
