

Robert L. Hurt Sr., 83 of Madison Heights passed away Wednesday, July 27, 2011 at Westminster Canterbury. He was the loving husband of Dorothy Lindsey Hurt for 62 years, a caring Dad to 3 children and Papa to 7 grandchildren.
Born January 19, 1928 in Lynchburg, VA he was a son of the late Hubert L. Hurt and Maggie Pearl Harris Hurt. In addition to his parents Robert was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Hurt Hienkle; four brothers, Lester, Hubert L. Jr. (Tinie), James (Ed) and Joseph.
After a leave of absence to serve for the U.S. Army in WWII (1946-1948), he graduated from E.C. Glass High school in 1950. He then served the U.S. Army again from 1950-1951stationed in Korea. He graduated from the Machinist Apprentice program at Lynchburg Foundry Company in1955 and was a Journeyman until 1957. He worked for General Electric for ten years before taking over Industrial Heating Co. Inc. as President and Owner in 1971 following his brother Joe’s untimely death. He retired in 1996 and enjoyed traveling with his wife. He was a member of the Edward N. Eubank Masonic Lodge No.262 and Fairview Christian Church
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Gwen H. Wilkerson and husband, Keith, of Monroe, Rhonda H. Nash and husband, R. Hunter, of Madison Heights, and a son, Robert L. (Bobby) Hurt Jr. and wife Tami, of Madison Heights; 7 grandchildren, Daniel Wilkerson, Joseph Wilkerson, Lindsey Nash Hill and husband David, Steven Nash, Brooke Hurt, Ben Hurt, Brandon Hurt and wife Mandi; special brother-in-law, Charles Lindsey; a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A funeral service will be conducted 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 30, 2011, at Whitten Monelison Chapel with the Rev. D. Jack Hamilton officiating. Interment will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park, where the American Legion Post 16 will present Military Honors.
The family will receive friends, 6-8 p.m., Friday, July 29, 2011, at Whitten Monelison Chapel and at other times at the residence.
