

Jean was born on March 4, 1932, in Amherst County, a daughter of the late Rose and Willie Bowles. As a Navy wife, she experienced and enjoyed many foreign countries and cultures. Upon retirement, Ray and Jean returned to their roots in the Virginia Mountains where Ray enjoyed hunting, fishing, and vegetable gardening, while Jean enjoyed her flower gardening and local wildlife.
Jean is survived by her two children: Valerie Thompson, of Virginia Beach, and Mike Thompson, and his wife Hortensia, of St. Mary’s County, Maryland; her two grandsons: Scott and Mark Thompson; her two sisters: Helen B. Scarboro, of Amherst, and Jane B. Hurt, and her husband Ira, of Roanoke; her sister-in-law, Janice Niedermair, of Silver Spring, Maryland; and three nephews David Hurt, Huff Hurt, Alan Cogan, and his wife Vickie, and her granddogs: Timber and Stella.
A funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at 4:00 p.m. at Central Baptist Church of Lowesville with Rev. Gary Anderson and Ret. Rev. Gene Beverly officiating. Burial will follow at Thompson Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 3:00 to 4:00 pm at the church.
