
The 79-year-old Staples worked for more than four decades at the Lynchburg Foundry, retiring as an engineer following many years as a machinist.
Born in the family home in Monroe on October 11, 1935, the Madison Heights High School graduate earned an associates degree in engineering from Central Virginia Community College.
Staples was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge 321, and the Woodmen of the World, Camp #7.
The son of Roy W. and Lena L. Staples served with honor in Company E, 2nd Battalion, 116th Infantry, “The Stonewall Brigade”, 29th Division in the Virginia National Guard.
Staples is survived by his wife of 59 years, Delora B. Staples, a sister, Irene S. Hunt and her husband, Harold, of Gladys, and two daughters, Kimberly S. Woodley, and her husband, Ken, of Appomattox, and Anita S. Corbett, and her husband, Glenn, of Madison Heights.
Staples is also survived his grandchildren, Kate Woodley, Ian Woodley and his wife Allison, Makala Corbett, Amanda Gilbert and her husband James, as well as her children and Staples’ great-grandchildren Allyson Jade Corbett, Carlynn Eve Gilbert and Madylon Hope Gilbert.
At Staples’ request there will be no viewing and arrangements are private. The family will receive friends at Whitten Monelison Chapel on Wednesday, September 30 from 7 to 8 p.m.
