

He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Henry Trent and Gertrude Padgett Trent, as well as his brother Lewis Edward Trent.
He is survived by the love of his life for over 65 years Marjorie Megginson Trent (Margie), his daughter Valerie and her husband David Wray, his son John Wesley (J.W.) and his wife Beverly, and son Jeff and his wife Janet. He is also survived by his sisters Peggy and her husband Roger Stump, and Linda and her husband Tucker Crews. In addition, Sam was blessed to have 8 grandchildren: Nicky, John, Ethan, Jeffrey Jr, Wesley, Lisa, Bruce, and Thomas. As well as 6 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.
Sam graduated from the New London Academy in 1955 and joined the United States Marine Corps right out of high school. While in boot camp Sam was awarded the most outstanding Marine in his graduating class and was promoted to Private First Class upon graduation. As a member of the Marine Corps honor guard Sam had the privilege of traveling with President Eisenhower and performing for many dignitaries including Queen Elizabeth II.
Upon leaving the Marine Corps Sam joined the Lynchburg Police Department in 1958 where he started as beat cop and worked his way up the ranks to Commander III. During his time with the LPD Sam was instrumental in starting the Lynchburg Chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) and was a founding member of the Lynchburg Police Department honor guard. Sam retired from the Lynchburg Police Department in 1990 after 32 years of service.
Sam was a member of the First Baptist Church of Monroe where he served as a deacon to the congregation. An avid hunter and fisherman, Sam loved to do anything that involved the outdoors. He was a member of the Lions Club International, the FOP, the Elks Club, the 8 Bucks Club, and the Monroe Chitterling Club.
Sam loved his family and friends and enjoyed spending time at the family cabin in the Blue Ridge Mountains. He will be greatly missed but we take comfort in the fact that we will all be reunited again in Heaven.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, May 9, 2022 at First Baptist Church of Monroe with Pastor Brian Clabough officiating. Burial will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 11:30 am – 12:30 pm prior to the service at the church.
