Shirley Tomlin Massie

Born March 1, 1937, in Amherst, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Bertha Burks Tomlin. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Elwood Tomlin; a daughter-in-law, Marie Debrell Foster Massie; and a sister-in-law, Etta Lee Tomlin.

Mrs. Massie was a graduate of Madison Heights High School and of Lynchburg School of Nursing. She drove a school bus for Amherst County School Systems, for many years, and was retired from Lynchburg General Hospital. She enjoyed quilting, ceramics, and flower gardening. She was a member of the Pedlar Valley Garden Club, and member of Midway Baptist Church.

She is also survived by three sons, Michael Gray Massie, Kenny Massie and wife Pat, and Tommy Massie and wife Dawn, all of Monroe; two sisters, Barbara Humphreys and husband James, of Monroe, and Betty Tyree and husband Donald, of Madison Heights; a brother, Marshall Tomlin, of Monroe and fiancée Cindy Clark, of Madison Heights; a sister-in-law, Diane Tomlin, of Monroe; 9 grandchildren, Tonya Newman and husband Paul, Lindsay Terwilliger and husband Craig, Adam Massie and wife Kaleigh, Denise Mitchell and husband Donald, Travis Massie and wife Candice, Jarrett Massie, Jamie Massie, Travis Tyree, and Megan Mason; 7 great-grandchildren, Sara Mitchell, Clay Mitchell, Savannah Massie, Taylor Massie, Emily Mitchell, Kylar Mason, and Kainen Mason, other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends Friday, July 22, 2011, from 6-8:30 p.m. at Whitten Monelison Chapel, and at other times at the residence.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 23, 2011, at Midway Baptist Church in Amherst, by the Rev. Hugh Bumgarner. Interment will follow in Allwood Cemetery in Amherst.

The family would like to thank Gentle Shepherd Hospice and Centra Hospice for the care given to Shirley.
