Sterling Williams Fitzgerald was welcomed with great joy to her Heavenly home by her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on the late evening of January 5, 2019. She was at home surrounded by her loving family.

Born on August 25, 1939, Sterling was a lifelong resident of Madison Heights, VA. Sterling embraced every moment of life with excitement and a cheerful smile always willing to help in any way she could. For 57 years Sterling was a member of Randolph Memorial Baptist Church where she was active in Sunday School through both teaching children and attending the Bessie Snead Sunday School class. She served on many committees and delivered Meals on Wheels. Sterling was employed as office manager by Sam Green Vault Corporation for 40 years. During her life, Sterling served as president of both Madison Heights Lioness Club and American Women’s Business Association. She was a member of Rambling Rose Garden Club and Madison Heights Baptist Church’s Koinonias nursing home ministry. Sterling embraced every moment of life to the fullest; she loved traveling and vacationing at the beach with family, playing a competitive game of dominoes, croquet, or softball. She loved reading, playing guitar, arranging flowers from the garden, pickling, cooking, and spending time outdoors. One of her greatest joys was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Wherever Sterling was, her husband and lifelong best friend, Lincoln was close by.

Sterling is survived by her beloved husband of 61 years, C. Lincoln Fitzgerald, son David G. Fitzgerald and wife Martha, daughter-in-law Jackie Fitzgerald, two siblings Mary Tyree and Russell Williams and wife Janice, nine grandchildren Adam Fitzgerald, Joel Fitzgerald, Emily Regan and husband Ryan, Zachary Fitzgerald, Jaime Fitzgerald, Dakota Fitzgerald, Megan Fitzgerald and fiance Cedrick, Michael Fitzgerald and fiance Debbie, and Daniel Fitzgerald and wife Gabriella, and six great-grandchildren Champion, Brantley, Landon, Cameron, Ma’kaelah, and Keeleigh.

She was preceded in death by her parents James Ransell and Jessie Camden Williams, two sons Edwin C. Fitzgerald and Todd L. Fitzgerald, daughter-in-law Shannon Fitzgerald, sisters Hazel Alvey, Lois Huff, and Minnabelle Arthur, and brothers James R. Williams, Jr., and Edward Williams.

A service celebrating her life will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 10 at Randolph Memorial Baptist Church with Dr. Derik Hamby and Dr. James Baucom officiating. Interment will follow at Amherst Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, January 9, 2019, at Whitten Monelison Chapel.

Lincoln Just wanted let you know that your whole family are in my prayers for comfort and strength. Sterling was a very special lady. I did her hair for years back in the 70's and 80's until I stopped working. She always had a smile on her face and it was a pleasure to know her. God Bless you all

Lincoln and David,
I am so very sorry for your loss.
I never met Ms. Fitzgerald personally but I had the pleasure of knowing David as well as working with Lincoln at the bank.
I would have to say that Ms. Fitzgerald did a great job as a wife and mother.
I will lift each of you in my daily prayers.

My thoughts and prayers are with you, Lincoln, David, and the entire family in the loss of your wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. I don't know anyone dearer than Sterling, and we will miss her so much as a part of the Koinonia choir at Madison Heights Baptist Church. She was someone who was always positive and uplifting, and I am so glad I knew her. I pray that God will give you all peace and comfort, as you mourn her passing.

I cannot remember a time when Mr. and Mrs. Fitzgerald were not our friends; they have always been forever friends. Whenever you saw Mrs. Fitzgerald there was her bright smile and sunshine of light coming from her eyes. Mrs. Fitzgerald was a true lady, a Christian, one who was so faithful and always cared for her family as well as others. May God Bless each and every one of you in the difficult days ahead.
