Thelma Mary Phillips Cumbie, 94, formerly residing at Dixie Airport Road, Madison Heights, VA, died Sunday, October 8, 2017, at Guggenheimer Health & Rehabilitation Center in Lynchburg, VA. Born in Lynchburg on October 28, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Andrew Jackson Phillips, Sr., and Mary Belle Maddox Phillips.
She is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and other beloved family members and friends, and also by special friend Oscar Barbour and his beloved family. She was predeceased by her husband, Harry Lee Cumbie; two brothers, Andrew Jackson Phillips, Jr., and John Thornton Phillips; and three sisters, Mrs. Roy S. (Nellie) Thomas, Jr., Mrs. Murray P. (Dorothy) Hall, and Mrs. James R. (Ruth) See.
A graduate of Brookville High School, Mrs. Cumbie worked for many years at Lynchburg Hosiery Mills and later at Quality Food Cooperative and for Hallmark. She was a member of Randolph Memorial Baptist Church in Madison Heights.
A memorial service at Randolph Memorial Baptist Church will be conducted by her pastor, the Rev. Derik Hamby, at 3:00 pm on Sunday, October 15. Interment at Virginia Memorial Park will be private. The family wishes to thank the staff of Heartland Health Care Center, Hospice, and her other loving caregivers in the last years of her life.
