Thurston was born on December 5, 1935, to the late Otha and Virginia Wheeler. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers (Haywood Wheeler and Melvin Wheeler) and two sisters (Lucinda Burley-Urban and Naomi Wheeler).
He was known as a loving family man, successful business owner, skilled cattleman, and a respected neighbor and friend. Thurston was a devoted husband and provider to his wife, Shirley, for 67 years. He deeply loved his family, making them his first priority, ensuring they had all they needed and more. He owned two different businesses. He ran the Dogwood Exxon Service Station for 20 plus years, then founded Thurston E. Wheeler Logging Company in 1980. As much as he loved working in the woods, he equally loved caring for his cattle. Especially in his later years, he enjoyed riding through his field on his Gator checking his cows. He was well respected, known as a friendly face, and always willing to help someone in any way possible.
Thurston is survived by his wife, Shirley B. Wheeler; his son, Stephen Wheeler (Lisa); two granddaughters, Samantha McCormick (Kyle) and Taylor Ramsey (Cole); 6 great-grandchildren, Mark, Harrison, Penelope, Luke, Tobias, and Charlie; two sisters, Darnelle Mawyer and Romelda Falls (Ray).
His funeral service will be held at Whitten Monelison Chapel on Friday, February 16th at 11 AM. Reverend Dr. Michael Fitzgerald, Reverend Jeffery Campbell, and Reverend Clyde Mawyer will be officiating.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 15th from 6 to 8 PM at Whitten Monelison Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Clifford Baptist Church (635 Fletchers Level Road, Amherst, Virginia, 24521).
