

Bill was born June 26, 1923, son of William Clifton Layne and Mary Susan McCraw Layne. The youngest of 11 children, he was predeceased by two brothers, Wesley and Curtis; sisters, Bessie Layne, Bertie Andrews, Sadie Groseclose, Annie Hesson, Margie Hesson, Mabel Layne, Frances Harrell, and Helen Whitmore. Bill is also preceded in death by a very special friend, Helen Bridgett of Madison Heights.
Bill is survived by a number of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins, and their families, and many church friends and neighbors. Bill is also survived by stepsons, Ryland Stutsman of Tennessee and Donald Stutsman of Florida.
Bill was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in Guadalcanal and Japan. Bill was Sunday School Superintendent of Madison Heights Methodist Church for a number of years. He was a member of Madison Heights Ruritan Club, delivered Meals-On-Wheels, and helped with Dial-A-Ride. He retired from Lynchburg Foundry after 33 years of service.
A celebration of Bill’s life and faith will be held at Amelon United Methodist Church on Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. officiated by Rev. Lawrence Erbin and the Rev. D. Jack Hamilton. Visitation will be at the church for one hour prior to the service.
