She was born July 30th, 1933, in Lago Colony, Aruba in the Dutch West Indies. Her childhood shared with 2 sisters, a brother and future spouse and in-laws was an idyllic island adventure that she fondly recalled all her life.
Zelda lived in many places throughout her life, but no matter where she resided, was close to and involved in the church community, and was a leader in youth ministries, Sunday school and community outreach. For several years she was the leader of the United Methodist Youth Fellowship and provided guidance for generations of young people. Most recently she was a member of Monroe United Methodist Church and remained active late into her senior years. As an avid reader, she was also a long-time member and supporter of the local libraries wherever she lived and was a member of Friends of The Library.
Zelda loved and was proud of her home in Madison Heights and spent countless hours gardening and enjoying her yard, the local wildlife, and the changing seasons. She had lived throughout the US and other countries but considered the mountains of Virginia home.
All her life she enjoyed sewing and was an exceptional seamstress, providing clothing not only for her family, but an extensive wardrobe for her daughter’s dolls. Her craft and skill extended beyond just sewing, and she always had a project of one kind or another.
Her heart always had a soft spot for animals of any kind and provided a home for many beloved dogs over the years, with her precious Skipper being the last. As part of her strong faith, she believed she would be reunited with them all.
One of the accomplishments Zelda was most proud of was the research and book she created detailing her mother’s life and “pioneer” spirit. Many years in the making, she was dedicated to preserving the family history.
She is survived by her daughters, Pamela Margolin (Bob) of High Point, NC, Patricia Work (Leonard Parrott) of Trinity, NC; two sons, Gene Work (Ann) of Lantana, FL;, David Work of Amherst, VA; brother, Edward Fields of Pagosa Springs, CO; two sisters, Lura Ward of Montgomery, AL and Eleanor Phillips (George) of Headland, AL; two granddaughters, Sarah Work of Fort Worth, TX and Samantha Work of Blacksburg, VA; a special daughter-in-love, Cathy Work; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on November 19th, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at Monroe United Methodist Church with Pastor Dan Dibble officiating.
Those wishing to make memorial contributions in her name are asked to consider the Veterans Administration or Wounded Warriors.
