Al was born in El Paso, Texas, on September 27, 1936, to the late Pilar and Consuleo Luna Mendez. He retired from the US Postal Service with 36 years of service. He was also a US Air Force Veteran and retired from the WV Air National Guard.
Al was a Minister of the gospel for 62 years. He pastored several churches and was the founder and pastor for 35 years of Goldtown Community Church.
Along with his parents, he was preceded by a son, Jeffrey Alan Mendez; two sisters and three brothers.
Al is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Rosalie Mullins Mendez; daughter, Vicki (Tim) Gibson of Charleston; son, Paul (Mary) Mendez of Hurricane; five grandchildren and three great- grandchildren; brothers, Ernest (Connie) Mendez of Temple, Texas, Sam (Patty) Mendez of Antioch, California and Abie (Lu) Mendez of Menifee, California.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 30, 2026, at Goldtown Community Church with Pastors Allan Stewart, Aaron Jones and Adam Lowe officiating. Also for those who may not be able to attend, the service will be live streamed on the Church's Facebook page. The Committal Service with Military Honors will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, July 31, 2026, at Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery, Dunbar.
A visitation with family and friends will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at Goldtown Community Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to Goldtown Community Church, 17549 Charleston Road, Kenna, West Virginia 25248.
