David Bailey of Shumate’s Branch, West Virginia, passed away peacefully on November 10, 2025, at the age of 89. A man of quiet strength and boundless generosity, David lived a life rooted in hard work, music, and kindness.
For many years, David worked as a top-notch lumber grader, earning deep respect throughout the industry for his skill and dedication. But it was music that truly defined his soul. From the time he was young, David played with heart and purpose—sharing songs that echoed through the hills and teaching others to carry on the tradition. His banjo, guitar, and voice became instruments of connection, storytelling, and joy.
David never met a stranger. Whether you were passing through or part of the community, he welcomed you with warmth and a helping hand. He turned no one away, believing deeply in his savior, Jesus Christ, and the mountain code of kinship and compassion. He leaves behind a legacy of melody, mentorship, and love—a life that touched many and will continue to inspire those who knew him.
He is survived by his son, Terry Bailey; Terry's wife, Shelly; granddaughters, Tiffany Milam and Lexi Bailey; three great-grandchildren: Emma Grace Milam, Easton Ray Milam, and Ember Rose Milam. He is also survived by his sister, Evaline Sharp.
A celebration of David’s life will be held at the Gospel Lighthouse Church in Sundial, West Virginia, on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, at 12:00 noon with Pastor Heather Drake officiating. This will be followed by military graveside honor burial at Pineview Cemetery, Orgas.
All are welcome to bring a song, a story, or a memory to share.
"Let the music play on, and the kindness echo through the hill.”
