James was a devoted and humble husband, dad, brother, uncle, grandpa and friend to so many and loved his extended family. He was a decorated war veteran having served in Vietnam. He worked in the coal mining industry for over 40 years.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth Massey, having passed when he was just a child; dad, Frank Massey and mom, Bernice who were parents of the heart; brother, Frank Massey Jr.; grandsons, Vincent and Buddy; great-grandson, Seth.
He is survived by his wife, Jane; daughter, Deanna (Kenny) Cooper of Chelyan, step-children, Ellen (Lewis) Prouse of Elkview, Andy (Kelly) Collison of Jacksonville, N.C., Karen (Deron) Sodaro of Mink Shoals, Janet Foley of Elkview; grandchildren, Braxton and Brooxanna; step-grandchildren, Tori, Anthony, Andrea, Melissa, Lennon, Caleb, Abby, Anna, Jake, Sam; step-great-grandchildren, Clara and Dean; sister, Brenda (Frank) Kirk; brothers, Gary (Nancy) Massey, Terry Massey as well as many nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 18, 2018 with Pastors Rick Gardner and Gary Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery with military honors.
Family and friends will gather for the visitation on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
