Janice Marie Chapman

Janice Marie Elliott Chapman from Rand, West Virginia was born on December 30, 1946, to Charles and Evelyn Elliott. She fell asleep in the arms of her Savior quietly in her home on September 15, 2026.

Some would say that she lost her battle to cancer, however, cancer was the avenue that got her home.

She was a graduate of DuPont High School, where she met and fell in love with her husband, Dave. They were married for almost 60 years and had three children, Bonita, David, and Matthew. Dave passed away six months ago, and we are certain was waiting for her when she walked into the gate of Heaven.

She worked in banking, a temporary job as a switchboard operator for One Valley Bank, started a career spanning 25 years, ending with her being part of a team with BB&T that handled the State of West Virginia account. In her working career she made a difference in the lives of those she worked with and around. Keeping close relationships, even after retirement.

Janice was a member of the Rand First Church of the Nazarene. She served that family as a Sunday School Teacher and on the Leadership Team. She was faithful to the Lord for many years, having a tender heart to the Holy Spirit, she shared how she was saved at an early age and how throughout, the Lord continued to be faithful. She attended and served a variety of roles in other churches, over the years. She was a Sunday School Teacher, Youth Leader, Women’s Ministry Director, Children’s Quizzing Coach, Board Member, and Pastors Encourager.

Her greatest desire was for her family to serve the Lord, not attend church, but to follow the Lord. Those left to carry her legacy are her daughter and best friend, Bonita (Jimmy) Knapp, her son David (Julie) Chapman, and son Matthew (Angela) Chapman. She was known as Grammy to Ethan (McKenzie) Chapman, Evan (Evan) Chapman, Emma Chapman, Matthew Knapp, Mark (engaged to Liz) Knapp, John Knapp, Samantha and Lily Chapman. Great grandson Clay Irvin. Her sister Charlotte (Tim) Bostick, Brother and Sister-in-Law Lynn and Debbie Chapman and so many nieces and nephews all carry lessons from Janice with them.

Janice would often sing songs, she said that when her husband passed, she lost her song, but the Lord gave it back to her. Cancer did not take her song. She was singing What A Day That Will Be her last day on Earth. The house will be different; there will be an empty chair at family gatherings, and the church pew has an empty spot. We will miss our Mom, Grammy, Sister, and Friend. . .but to everything there is a season.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 20, 2026, from 4:00pm – 7:00pm at Stevens & Grass Funeral Home in Malden, WV. Her Homegoing Service will take place at The Rand First Church of the Nazarene, 305 Davidson Avenue Charleston, WV Monday September 21, 2026, at 11:00am. Burial will follow at Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery in Dunbar, WV.
