Jesse began his career as a welder with Baker Equipment and FMC, later worked as a coal miner for Carbon Fuel, and concluded his career as a crane operator and welder with Amherst Industries. Yet, Jesse could never be defined solely by his work. He was known for his quick wit and wicked sense of humor that kept his family entertained—and occasionally horrified—in the best possible way.
He loved fishing, camping, and his weekly trips to McDonald’s and The Tobacco Store, where he was known for his generous tips and friendly conversation. Above all else, Jesse’s greatest love was his family.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Willie Mae Downey, brother William Downey and by his much-loved son, Jesse Downey Jr. He is survived by his devoted wife, Nancy (Bowles) Downey; his beloved daughter, Leanna Colston; his cherished son, Shane Downey (Karla) daughter-in-law Shelley Downey; and the joys of his life—his grandchildren, Cassidy Colston, Jenna and Lane Downey, Brooke Lanham, Chad Conrad, and three great grandchildren. He also leaves behind his loving sister, Joyce (David) Stevens.
Jesse will be remembered for his laughter, generosity, and the deep love he shared with those fortunate enough to know him.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 7:00 PM Monday October 27, 2025, at Stevens & Grass Funeral Home, Malden with Pastor Mike Long officiating.
A visitation with family and friends will be held one hour prior to the service.
