Maxwell Leslie “Max” Greene, 91, of Charleston, passed away peacefully at home on December 28, 2017. Max joined the Army Infantry at the age of sixteen and was shipped to Camp Hood, Texas, for seventeen weeks of basic training. After completion of training, he was shipped to Camp Kilmer in New Jersey to the Port of Embarkation. In support of World War II, he boarded the ship U. S. Rollins Victory, was on the ship for fifteen days. He then crossed the English Channel and was transported by boat to Le Havre in Normandy (France), where on June 6, 1944, Max’s brother, Silbert Greene, lost his life during the D-Day invasion. Upon landing, he was sent to Dachau, Germany, to clean out the Concentration Camps and the Nuremberg building where the trials were conducted. Max was overseas for 26 months in the 71st Division of the Third Army under the command of General Patton. (He was in Germany when General Patton died.) Max left the Army holding the rank of Technical Sergeant after three years in the service. After returning from the Army, Max worked 11 years as a route carrier covering three counties for Blossom Dairy, then 21 years as a Police Officer for the City of Charleston, retiring with the rank of Sergeant and was famously known as the “Mayor of Capitol Street”. Max then went to work as a Security Guard for Union Carbide and after 12 years of service, he retired for good in 1992. He was born in Boone County on September 5, 1926, to the late Lomer and Zona Miller Greene. Along with his parents, his first wife, Phyllis and his brothers, Carson, Wandal, Lowell, Silbert and Clifford, preceded Max in death. Max is survived by his best friend and loving wife of 20 years, Ethel; daughters, Karen (Richard) Adkins and Zona Greene, all of Nitro; stepdaughter, Donna (Tim) Faulkner of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; his dog that he considered his baby, Amy; grand-dogs, Annie, Gracie and Kailie; his good friends, Denver (Margie) Mullins, John Dewey and Jim Eplin; and a host of many friends. The funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 3, 2018, at Goldtown Community Church, Goldtown, with Pastor Al Mendez officiating. The burial will follow the service at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes. Family and friends will gather for the visitation one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in memory of Max to HospiceCare, 1606 Kanawha Boulevard W., Charleston, West Virginia 25387-2536.
