Roberta Oiler Hackney, age 78, traded in her walker for angel wings on March 10th, 2018 at her home in Elkview, WV. She was born on August 31, 1939 in Cannelton, WV, the daughter of Arnold Oiler and Eunice Singleton Oiler.

Roberta graduated with honors from Montgomery High School at the young age of 16 and went on to pursue a Medical Technician certification within the nursing division at The McMillan Hospital in Charleston, WV. While residing in the school’s housing facilities she was offered an opportunity to work full time while completing her certification. After graduation, she moved to Elkhart, IN where she worked as a Medical Technician at Elkhart General Hospital.

Roberta married Bobby Gene Hackney in 1963 and they relocated to Charleston, WV in 1975 where she later went on to pursue a career supporting students with intellectual and physical disabilities within the Kanawha County school system.

Roberta and Bobby had three children. She is survived by her daughters Melanie Donus and her husband Andrew of Long Island, NY, along with Michelle Stevens and her husband David of Elkview, WV. She had five grandchildren, Raechel, Dimitri, Michael, Maximus and Andrew. Her son, Michael Bob, passed away in 1997.

Despite her own physical challenges Roberta thoroughly enjoyed helping others in need within her family, church and community. Her Christian faith was of the upmost importance to her and she endeavored to continuously improve her knowledge of the Bible and walk as an example of Christ. When not attending Elkview Baptist Church during various regular worship times or spending time with family/friends, she could be found chatting with neighbors while sitting on her porch swing drinking coffee and reading books by Christian female authors such as Grace Livingston Hill, Tracie Peterson, and Beverly Lewis.

A visitation with family and friends is scheduled from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 15th at Elkview Baptist Church immediately followed by a funeral service/life celebration at 1:00 PM officiated by Pastor Charles Bias. The interment will follow at Spring Hill Cemetery, Charleston.

I knew Mrs. Hackney and her son Michael well. A more dedicated mother I have never met. She was a tireless, selfless advocate for physically and mentally challenged children and adults. I feel fortunate to have known her and Michael, and I am certain that the Gates of Heaven opened for them as soon as they approached. I also have no doubt they were welcomed with open and loving arms.
