Alan was born on July 20, 1948 in Irvington NJ. He grew up in Roselle Park, NJ and graduated from Roselle Park HS. In January of 1967 he entered the United States Navy and proudly served until he was honorably discharged in 1971. He relocated to Long Beach Island for his love of the water, beach, surfing and boating. He continued his service to his country by joining the United States Coast Guard and was stationed in Beach Haven, NJ. He attended Montclair State University where he earned his Bachelor's Degree. He continued his education at Fairleigh Dickinson University where he earned his Master's Degree. In September of 1983 he began his teaching career at Pinelands Regional High School where he taught beside his beautiful and loving wife Diane, who he married on August 4, 1984. He taught Social Studies and later became the supervisor of that department. Alan and Diane quickly became two of the most beloved teachers in the Pinelands School District. Together they were always seen at all of the districts sporting events, activities, proms and trips. Alan could always be found with the chain gang on the sidelines of the football games while Diane enjoyed the game from the stands or helped out at the snack bar.
Outside of work Alan enjoyed boating and fishing in his Grady White along with surfing, boogie boarding, clamming and most of all the beach. He was an avid runner and completed several 18 Mile Runs on Long Beach Island, with the highlight being running the NYC Marathon. Alan also loved vacationing in his favorite place Walt Disney World with his family.
In 2006 he retired so he could spend more time with his loving stepdaughter, Emily and his 3 grandchildren, Joseph, Olivia and Delaney, who were his pride and joy. He loved attending all of their games, activities and parties. He liked watching movies, playing games and spending time with them. Even just the simple rides to school, trips to target and fro yo brightened his day In retirement he also found a new love for golf. Any given day you could find him on the links at Sea Oaks or competing in a golf tournament.
Alan is predeceased by his loving wife, Diane, his mother Violet and father Oscar. He is survived by his stepdaughter Emily, her husband Joe and their three children Joseph, Olivia and Delaney.
A memorial service will be held for Alan on Saturday, July 30, 2022 from 3pm to 5pm at Thos. L. Shinn Funeral Home 10 Hilliard Dr. Manahawkin, NJ 08050, followed by a funeral service from 4:30 PM to 5:00 PM. As a celebration of life, Alan would want to be remembered for his love of the water, Disney and golf. Please dress in your favorite golf, Disney, beach or boating shirt/attire (casual).
