Charles “Jim” (as he was also known), lived a full life. He told his family numerous times that he enjoyed every part of his life and would not have changed anything.
He enlisted in the Marine’s in 1950 and worked as a Diesel Mechanic. He was honorably discharged in 1957 with the rank of Sargent. Upon his discharge from the Marines, he enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1964 with a Master’s Degree in Education. He went on to further his education and enrolled in Temple University, graduating in 1967.
He started his teaching career at the Spring Garden Automotive Center, he then taught at Bucks County Technical School from 1960 until his retirement. It was at Bucks County Tech that he was awarded “Teacher of the Year”.
His students were very important to him, so much so, that when he purchased a 1967 Camaro Rally Sport and then a 1968 Camaro Z-28, he brought both cars to the Tech and had the “kids” do hands on mechanical work on them. Once they completed the overhaul, they and Charles took both cars, as well as their own cars to Atco Drag Way to race.
He had the honor of having a feature article in Boys Life Magazine in 1963 and in Drag Racing Illustrated in 1972.
Upon his retirement from teaching, he joined the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He was with the Auxiliary for over 25 years and twice held the role as Commander.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 20, 2019 from 10:30am-12:30pm with a funeral home service at 12:30pm at the Thos L. Shinn Funeral Home, 10 Hilliard Dr., Manahawkin, NJ. Burial will follow at the Greenwood/Tuckerton Cemetery in Tuckerton, NJ.
