. Dorothy R. Horner, 89 of Waretown, died Wednesday, June 7, 2023. Dorothy grew up on Long Beach Island and loved to tell everyone about her childhood at the Ocean View Inn, and what the island was like during WWII. She was a proud graduate of the “Class of 51” from Barnegat High School and Peirce Business College. She married her high school sweetheart, Joseph C. Horner, they were married for 56 years before his passing in 2010. Together she and Joe built their own home where they raised four children Joseph, Deborah, Timothy, and Julie. Dorothy was a dedicated public employee, serving as the Town Clerk for the Township of Ocean (Waretown) for over 47 years. She was a member of the Waretown United Methodist Church Choir, played the piano during hymn sing, and for many years sang O Holy Night on Christmas Eve. Dorothy loved to camp, and enjoyed planning her trips, mostly to Maine where her and her family stayed at Chewonki Campground, a beloved summer tradition. Her most treasured role in her life was that of grandma or g-ma. Her grandchildren Joey, Michael, Gennae, Amanda, Andrea, Greg, Lauren, Timmy and John were the joy of her life . An avid Duke basketball fan one of her greatest days was when she met Coach K, and got to watch her John Boy play a game in Cameron Stadium. During the sunset years she treasured time spent at Barnegat Lighthouse, Pemaquid Point and being a part of her family’s lives.
She is survived by her son Joseph Horner and his wife, Denise of Toms River, daughter Deborah Nielsen and her husband Christopher Nielsen of West Amwell, son Timothy Horner and his wife Sally of Waretown, and daughter Julie Keizer and her husband Ron of Damariscotta, Maine. Her nine grandchildren, and 14 great children.
