Edward W. Shanley, 78, of Beach Haven Park, NJ passed away after a courageous battle with lymphoma on April 14, 2021. He was born in Passaic, NJ and was also a resident of Clifton, NJ for more than 30 years.
He was predeceased by his father, Edward J. Shanley and his mother Helen Burke Shanley.
Edward is survived by his high school sweetheart and beloved wife of 55 years, Carole; his three loving sons Timothy Shanley and his wife Melissa, Christopher Shanley and his wife Julie, and Michael Shanley and his wife Krista; his cherished grandchildren Annabelle, Caroline, Jack, Brian, Daniel, Matthew, Reagan, and T.J. Shanley; his brothers William, James, Richard, and Kevin Shanley, and his sisters Katherine Fulton and Margaret Cryan.
He graduated from Pope Pius XII High School in Passaic, NJ (Class of 1961) and worked his entire professional career in the telecommunications industry for New Jersey Bell, Bell Atlantic, and Verizon. He also served his nation as a member of the New Jersey Army National Guard. Edward was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in the fall of 1999, and he fought and won a courageous battle with this deadly disease. During the next 21 years, he took full advantage of his second chance at life and lived it to the fullest. He focused on his family and the truly joyful and meaningful aspects of life.
Upon his retirement, he and Carole became full time residents of Long Beach Island where he devoted his time and energy as a volunteer for the Beach Haven First Aid Squad and as an usher at the St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church in Brant Beach, NJ. He performed a multitude of operational and administrative functions for the First Aid Squad, and helped organize and execute vital fundraising efforts.
Although he possessed many talents and enjoyed many hobbies and interests, he found the greatest joy in his family. A generous man in every sense of the word, he befriended nearly everyone he encountered, and he could light up the room with his smile and engaging personality. Ed had a passion for helping others, took great pride in the success of his three sons and eight grandchildren and always encouraged them to chase their dreams and goals.
