
Joan C. Williams (nee Cave), age 80, died May 10, 2016, in Stafford Township, NJ. Joan was born in Collingswood, NJ and grew up in Oaklyn, NJ. She graduated from Collingswood High School Class of 1953 and attended the Stenotype Institute of Philadelphia. In 1959, Joan married Thomas H. Williams, Jr. of Barrington, NJ. They were blessed to spend 46 ½ years together as husband and wife before Tom died in 2005. Joan and Tom raised their two children, Thomas (Reg) and Vicki in Mt. Laurel, NJ. They retired to Manahawkin, NJ in 1990.
Joan is survived by her son Thomas E. Williams and his wife, Linda of Southampton, NJ and her daughter, Vicki A. Foley and her husband, Brian, of Allentown, NJ. She was a loving, supportive mother to them all of her life and was a role model to her children and grandchildren. Along with her two brothers, John Cave of Haddon Township and Robert Cave of Pennsauken, Joan is survived by her six grandchildren, Kerrie Blash (Williams), Dan Williams and Ryan Williams; Stephanie Trause (Foley), Brian Foley, Jr. and Michelle Foley. Joan is survived by one great grandchild, Thomas Trause. Joan was so happy when her first great grandchild was born in 2015, and honored that he was named after her late husband.
Joan devoted 21 years of service to Union Carbide Corporation, Linde Division, Moorestown, NJ. When she retired, she immediately began assisting Union Carbide retirees to resolve benefit issues and became Carbide’s Friend in Need Coordinator on the East Coast. She attended many Linde reunions over the years, and enjoyed the friendships she made at Linde.
Joan was a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority and was very active in the Stafford Township Regular Republican Club and Ocean County Committee. Joan served as President of the Republican Club twice and served as Secretary many times. She also served as Republican Municipal Chair and Vice Chair. Joan served on many community committees, including Stafford Township’s Natural Lands Advisory Committee, Health Advisory Committee, Senior Advisory Council and the Colony Lakes Homeowners Association Environmental Review Committee. Joan was ever present at Township Committee meetings, and she and Tom were honored with the Steward Award in April 2006.
There will be a memorial service for Joan on Sunday, May 15, 2016 from 2:00pm-4:00pm with a funeral home service at 3:30pm at the Thos. L. Shinn Funeral Home, 10 Hilliard Dr., Manahawkin, NJ. Family and friends are welcome.
While Joan adored yellow roses, her wishes are to support her church where she worshipped for over 30 years. Donations in Joan’s memory may be made to St. Mary of the Pines Church, 100 Bishop Way, Manahawkin, NJ, 08050.
