John R. Vaupel, 93, of Manahawkin, NJ passed away peacefully on June 7, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.
He has been reunited with his beloved wife, Joan, who predeceased him.
Born in Pittsburgh, PA, John was a man who lived life with an open heart, an inquiring mind, and an infectious sense of humor. He was a passionate traveler, a car enthusiast, and a fiercely loyal hockey fan—never missing a chance to cheer on his favorite team, the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Always curious and deeply engaged in the world around him, John loved nothing more than a good conversation, connecting with people from all walks of life.
While he will be remembered for his warmth and dedication to his family, it is John’s legendary quirks that will be missed the most. He was a man of unique traditions, famously ordering his margaritas with a bold Spanish accent (despite not speaking a word of Spanish). He kept his eyes to the ground on his daily walks, carefully collecting the lost coins he found along the way. Perhaps most notoriously, John was a master of the "bargain gift"—frequently presenting his loved ones with clothes that were entirely the wrong size, simply because the deal was too good to pass up.
Above all, John was a devoted family man. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories. He was the loving father of Robert Vaupel (Katie Clark) and Jane Militello (Jim), and the immensely proud grandfather of Katie and Eric Militello, and Beatrice Vaupel.
He was a truly beloved, wonderfully unique man who brought endless joy to those who knew him. His family will forever smile thinking of his accents, his coins, and his oversized sweaters.
