Obituary/Memorial Margaret Ellen Weiss March 14, 1930 – October 12, 2019
How do you capture a full and long life succinctly? The Margaret we all knew and loved began as an early high school student who fell in love with a picture of her friend’s older brother and the rest is just history.
Right from the start of her marriage to Fritz she had an open door policy for friends and family; feeding everyone and making them feel warmly welcomed and special. A pot of tea, a glass of milk, a cool drink was always the ready along with her famous hot milk cake and her insatiable love of anything chocolate. She was known to slip extra slices of hot milk cake into her children’s lunch bag to share with their friends. It was a stable at every gathering.
The beach was Margaret and Fritz’s “happy place”. They discovered LBI in the early 60’s and it instantly felt like home. By the mid 60’s and the purchase of a duplex she became a weekend fishing widow. With retirement and a home she was a weeklong fishing widow. Over those nearly 6 decades on the island she was happiest when her friends and family were enjoying the beach laughing together and having lots of fun.
Besides adoring being Fritz’s wife, she loved being a mother to 4, a grandmother to 11, and a great grandmother to 14. All share special memories of her devotion to family. Birthdays were celebrated home-made dinner. Countless stories read to children, hours playing Rummikub or cards filled her retirement years with her large family. Her own children vividly remember her needlelike fingers scrubbing their head with her famous retort, “I’m just massaging your scalp.” Having Gram wash your hair after a day at the beach occasionally became idol threat for misbehavior. Above and beyond all the memories she was cherished and loved by all of them.
Margaret was a lifetime avid volunteer in originations focused of the needs of both children and adults.
She will be missed by all, especially “Local 4”. We love you Mom, Gram, Gram-Gram, GaGa.
Margaret was a 30 year participant in the Long Beach Twonship Healthy Bones program. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to Long Beach Township Park and Recreation Healthy Bones Program.
