Alvin Rubin was raised in the Bronx, NY and graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School. He worked for Supermarkets General Corporation until his retirement in September of 1987. During his time at SGC, he also served as the Commissioner of the Pathmark Softball League, creating the schedule, reserving ballfields, and hiring umpires for over 1,000 games per season played by 200 Pathmark store teams throughout New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Delaware, and Maryland. As Commissioner, he got to present the Pathmark League Championship Trophy to the winning team at the annual Pathmark Picnic at Forest Lodge in Warren, NJ each Labor Day Weekend, a whole day event that his family always enjoyed attending. After retiring, he worked part time for a decade with the Leukemia Society of America to raise donations in the fight against Leukemia, the disease to which his first daughter Meryl succumbed at the age of two and a half.
He enjoyed his childhood with his many close friends and family in the Bronx during the school year and in the Catskill Mountains each summer, where he met his beloved Charlotte, his wife of more than 73 years. The two were married on November 26, 1952 and became parents to four children: Meryl, Diana, Jeffrey, and Steven. He was a supportive father and hardworking provider for his family and was also a loyal son to his parents, whom he visited in Florida often and called every Sunday morning to converse over the phone. He also had a never-ending supply of “Dad Jokes” that brought smiles to the faces of his family.
He and Charlotte raised their children in the Sunnyfield Garden Apartments in Linden until July of 1967, when they purchased their first home in Monmouth Heights in Manalapan Township, NJ. In 1988, with Diana, Jeff, and Steven having graduated college, they moved to Whittingham (now Greenbriar at Whittingham), where they have remained for more than 38 years. Alvin served on the Whittingham Entertainment committee for years, arranging bus trips to Yankees games and hiring many famous entertainers, including Pat Cooper, who ended up spending time with Alvin and his family on several occasions.
Alvin was an avid sports fan, especially of the Yankees, Jets, Knicks, and Rangers, and took his family to numerous sporting events, including many World Series games and Super Bowls. He also loved spending time at the race track, attending the Belmont Stakes and Travers Stakes each summer, as well as playing blackjack in Atlantic City and Las Vegas. In his later years, he greatly enjoyed spending time with seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Alvin is survived by his wife Charlotte Rubin, daughter Diana Leventhal, son Jeffrey Rubin and his wife Mercedes, son Steven Rubin and his wife Abbe, grandchildren Thomas Colon, Jacqueline Rubin, Grace Rubin, Hannah Leventhal and her husband Jack DeGroote, Elijah Rubin, Lee Rubin, David Rubin, and great-grandchildren Christopher Rubin and Amelia Colon.
