She was born on July 1, 1922 in Newark, New Jersey to Charles and Lillian Menkes.
Gloria was the executive secretary to the president of Elizabeth Iron Works in Union, New Jersey and held a similar position at Hunt-Wesson. She went to college in her late 40s and early 50s, receiving a BA from Kean College in Union. Gloria appeared fragile and delicate but was actually strong and intelligent, with a great sense of humor, and an impressive vocabulary.
Gloria was the devoted mother of Doris (Ken) Kraemer, Susan Goldberg, and the late Edward (Cindy) Malkin, a beloved grandmother to Rebecca (Scott) Ellis, Martin (Heather) Kraemer, Sarah (Cheshire) Isaacs, David (Lori) Kraemer, Sharon (Jono) Modan, and David Zuckerman (Eileen Geoghegan), and the great-grandmother of eleven great-grandchildren, with another due in May.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Nathan Malkin (1943 - 1985), her second husband, Saul Stempler (1988 - 2013), her cherished son, Edward Malkin, in January, 2022, and her six siblings.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, May 1, 2023 at 1:00 PM at Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, 44 Wilson Avenue, Manalapan, New Jersey 07726 followed by a committal service at 2:30 PM at Mount Lebanon Cemetery, 189 Gill Lane, Iselin, New Jersey 08830.
After growing up during the Great Depression and knowing hunger herself, she was always concerned that others had enough to eat. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Gloria's memory may be made to your own local food bank, or to Mazon: “A Jewish Response to Hunger” (https://mazon.org). Alternatively, Gloria lived at the Applewood Continuing Care Community for the last 10 years. The kind, competent care she received there enabled her to reach her nearly 101st birthday! Donations by check can be made out to the “Applewood Employee Appreciation Fund” and sent by mail to: 1 Applewood Dr, Freehold Township, NJ 07728.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared with her family at: www.bloomfieldcoopermanalapan.com
