Harvey N. Dessel, 80, passed away on October 27, 2026, following a long illness. He will be remembered with love and affection by his family, friends, and all those lives he touched.
Harvey was part of a family with deep roots in the Metuchen, NJ community, where his family once owned the Metuchen Food Market. His professional career later brought him to Rutgers University, where he dedicated many years of service before retiring.
Harvey had a true appreciation for art and creativity. He was an artist himself who enjoyed painting and drawing, with particular fondness for pictures depicting houses and doors. His love of these subjects were reflected throughout his home, which he decorated with artwork and pieces that expressed his artistic interests and personal taste. His home was a reflection of the things he found beautiful and meaningful.
He also enjoyed visiting Grounds For Sculptures in Hamilton, NJ, where he loved wandering among the sculptures and exploring the many different exhibits. Each visit offered something new to appreciate and inspired his own artistic interests.
Harvey valued friendships and staying active in his community. He enjoyed spending time with friends at the Robbinsville Senior Center, where he looked forward to sharing lunches, playing games, and participating in exercise classes. These gatherings provided opportunities for friendship, laughter, and companionship and were an important part of his life.
Harvey found pleasure in the beauty of art, the details of his surroundings, and the simple joys of spending time with friends and family. Whether expressing himself through his artwork, discovering something new at an art exhibit, or enjoying a meal and a game with friends, he appreciated the experiences that made life special.
Harvey is survived by his beloved sister, Arlene Bagen and his brother-in-law, Ron, along with nieces and nephews who will cherish his memory. Harvey was pre-deceased by his brother, Leonard Dessel.
Though Harvey’s passing brings sadness to those who knew and loved him, his artistic spirit, his friendships, and the memories shared with family and friends will live on.
May he rest in peace.
