Herb was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York and graduated from Boys’ High School in Bedford-Stuyvesant. He proudly served his country as a U.S. Army Reservist from 1958 -1964. He married his sweetheart, Ethel, in 1965 and they moved to New Jersey in the early 1970’s. Together they raised their family in Marlboro, and he resided there for 51 years. Herb was a wonderful father and “Papa,” raising his children with love and joy, and celebrating all of his grandchildren’s milestones with pride.
Herb was a diamond buyer for many years for Marcus & Co., and then went on to own Jade Medex, a small medical examination business. Herb had a passion for saving lives and this was best exhibited through his work as a CPR instructor. In that capacity, he taught the most important lifesaving skill for 33 years to thousands of individuals, both EMS volunteers and healthcare providers at CentraState Medical Center in Freehold. He will be most fondly remembered for his dedication to his community, as a founding member and later Captain of the Marlboro First Aid Squad. He continued to proudly serve the organization and his community as the longest actively serving member (44 years). He is lovingly known to the Marlboro EMS community as “Uncle Herb.” Herb will forever be remembered as an exemplar of public service.
Herb was predeceased by his wife Ethel, of 40 years. Surviving are his loving children, son Evan Steinberg and his wife Susan of Marlboro; daughter Dawn Levy and her partner Donald Hutson of San Diego; his partner Eileen Binstock; and his four grandchildren: Morgan, Brooke, Rayna and Emily.
A funeral service will be held Sunday, April 7, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, 44 Wilson Avenue, Manalapan, New Jersey 07726 followed by a committal service at 1:30 PM at Beth Israel Cemetery, 1098 Woodbridge Center Drive, Woodbridge, New Jersey 07095.
