Ivin was born in Brooklyn NY to Joseph and Rose Doctor. He graduated with a Masters of Science degree from Brooklyn College. Ivin taught at FDR High School in Brooklyn for 37 years. Although no one was impressed but him, he was proud to say that he never took a day off. Ivin truly loved teaching and without an ounce of modesty, often spoke of how he had special methods for keeping all of the students interested and eager to learn about chemistry. After retiring, Ivin continued his love for teaching and worked as a professor at the College of Staten Island.
While working as a Camp Counselor, at 21 years old he met the love of his life and future wife, “Mir”. Marrying Miriam was his #1 priority. He saved his money and instead of buying a badly needed car, he bought Mir an engagement ring, carrying it home in his pocket on the train.
In addition to his “gorgeous and terrific wife”, Ivin loved music, the Mets, All you can eat buffets and deserts and most importantly, dancing. If you invited him to a party, you’d better be ready for a show.
Ivin is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, who made sure that he remained active, healthy and social despite suffering from Alzheimer’s disease for the last 10 years of his life. He is also survived by his 3 children, Lenny (Christina), Robin (Brian) and Adam (Sarah); his doting grandchildren, Leah, Drew, Travis, Madison, Kiara and Meghan.
We will always cherish the endless compliments, reminders of his love, and many beautiful and entertaining memories of life with Popop.
