John lived his life guided by the Golden Rule and was a lasting example of honesty, fairness, and integrity. Raised in Jersey City, where neighborhood stickball was the game of choice, he carried with him throughout life the values of hard work, loyalty, and resilience formed in those early years.
He earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Saint Peter’s University and later a Master’s degree in Computer Science from Stevens Institute of Technology. His academic accomplishments reflected the intelligence, determination, and work ethic that defined him.
He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army in 1964 and retired 22 years later with the rank of Major. During his distinguished military career, he served with the XVIII Airborne Corps and was deployed to the Dominican Republic in 1965 as part of Operation Power Pack. He served his country with honor, professionalism, and quiet pride.
John built a successful career in technology with Bell Labs, AT&T, and later retired from Santa Cruz Operations. He was respected throughout his career for his professionalism, candor, and sound judgment.
John was an active and valued member of the Home Owners Association and his senior community. He generously gave his time and expertise volunteering with the AARP, helping taxpayers who needed complimentary guidance in preparing and filing their returns.
Above all, John will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and a man of quiet strength and integrity. Humble and steady by nature, he earned the deep respect and affection of all who knew him. He will be greatly missed by his former military comrades, neighbors, family, friends, and, of course, his poker buddies.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Marlene Maciaszek; his daughter, Danielle Gordon (Mitchell Bell); and his cherished grandchildren, Harrison Gordon and Sydney Gordon.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Richard Maciaszek and Tom Maciaszek, and by his parents, John and Mary Maciaszek.
