Joseph Goldstein, lovingly known as "Joe," passed away peacefully on July 5, 2026, at the age of 98. Born on April 28, 1928, in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in Coney Island, Joe lived a life defined by service, hard work, laughter, and above all, an unwavering devotion to his family.
Joe proudly served his country as a Private First Class in the United States Army during the Korean War, serving overseas with honor and distinction. He carried the values of duty, resilience, and integrity throughout his life, and his military service remained a source of pride for both him and his family.
Throughout his career, Joe embraced every opportunity to provide for those he loved. Over the years, he worked as an electrician, a meat distributor, a clothing store owner, and later as a bus driver. No matter the profession, Joe approached every job with determination, honesty, and a strong work ethic.
While Joe wore many hats throughout his life, his greatest and most cherished role was that of husband, father, grandfather, and family patriarch. He was the beloved husband of Roslyn Levine Goldstein, with whom he built a loving family and shared a lifetime of memories.
He is survived by his devoted children, Shari Goldstein-Behar and Jeffrey Goldstein; his cherished grandchildren, Rachel Behar, Michael Behar, Alex Rubel and Olivia Davis; and countless extended family members and dear friends whose lives were enriched by his presence. He was predeceased by his brothers, Carl Goldstein and Sam Goldstein.
Family was Joe's greatest joy. Whether gathered around the dinner table, celebrating holidays, or simply spending time together, nothing made him happier than being surrounded by the people he loved. His grandchildren knew him not only as a loving grandfather but as a mentor, storyteller, and one of the sharpest minds they had ever known.
Joe had an extraordinary memory that amazed everyone who knew him. Sharp as a whip until his final days, he had an incredible gift for numbers and a natural mathematical mind. He loved asking thoughtful questions, engaging in meaningful conversations, and making everyone around him feel important. His quick wit, infectious sense of humor, and larger-than-life personality left lasting impressions wherever he went.
He found joy in life's simple pleasures. Joe never missed an opportunity to cheer on the Knicks or the Yankees and could happily spend an afternoon watching just about any sporting event. He enjoyed playing blackjack, challenging himself with Sudoku puzzles, and, perhaps most famously, enjoying a good meal. Joe always cleared his plate—a small tradition that became part of the legend everyone affectionately remembers.
Those who knew Joe will forever remember his famously long goodbyes. He never rushed a farewell, often holding onto a handshake just a little longer, making sure you knew how much
you meant to him. His favorite expression, "Only good things," perfectly reflected the optimism and warmth with which he approached life and the people around him.
Joe's Jewish faith remained an important part of his life. He grew up with the Remsen Heights Jewish Center in Brooklyn and, in his later years, was a member of Chabad of Freehold, where he found comfort, community, and spiritual connection.
To those fortunate enough to know him, Joe was simply a legend. His kindness, humor, wisdom, resilience, and unconditional love created a legacy that will live on through his family and everyone whose lives he touched. Though he will be deeply missed, the lessons he taught, the stories he shared, and the love he gave so freely will continue to guide future generations.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels in Manalapan Township, New Jersey. Family and friends will gather at 8:15 a.m., with services beginning at 9:00 a.m. The procession will depart for New Montefiore Cemetery in West Babylon, New York, at 10:00 a.m., with burial at 12:30 p.m.
Shiva will be held at the family home in Freehold, New Jersey:
● Thursday: 4:00–8:00 p.m.
● Friday: 2:00–5:00 p.m.
● Sunday: 12:00–4:00 p.m.
● Monday: 4:00–8:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project in Joseph Goldstein's memory, honoring his service and supporting the men and women who have sacrificed for our country or Chabad of Freehold.
Joe's life was measured not by the years he lived, but by the love he gave, the laughter he shared, and the family he cherished above all else. His legacy will endure in every story told, every lesson remembered, every long goodbye, and every handshake that lingers just a little longer.
May his memory forever be a blessing.
