Marshall S. Klein, 98, of Monroe Township, New Jersey passed away on Wednesday, April 3, 2024 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born and raised in New York City, then resided in Old Bridge and Scotch Plains before moving to Monroe.
Marshall was predeceased by his wife Barbara, his sister Joan Polskin and her husband Herb, and his son-in-law Paul Gutkin.
Surviving are his companion Sylvia Schechter; daughter Marcia Gutkin; son Geoffrey Klein and his wife Judy; his grandchildren Alyssa Gutkin and her husband Samuel Rosario, Joshua Klein and his wife Dr. Sarah Klein and Daniel Klein; as well as his nieces and nephew Judi Knopke and her husband Michael, Emily Zylber and her husband Maurice, and Howard Polskin and his wife Philippa.
Marshall enjoyed his family and friends, volunteering, and golf. Shortly after graduating high school, Marshall served in the US Navy during WWII. He began his professional career by owning a children’s clothing store. This experience encouraged Marshall to pursue further education and he earned an MBA from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Growing up with a Blind/Deaf Uncle (Joe), Marshall was passionate about volunteering with organizations focused on vision, and joined Lions International in 1949 where he was an active member for 75 years. His other volunteer work included The NJ Commission for the Blind, the Eye Bank Association of America, the Fund for the New Jersey Blind, and President B’nai B’rith,
Because of his extensive volunteer work, in the early 1970s, The Eye Institute of New Jersey was born where Marshall was sought out to be its first Executive Director. He continued his career there for over 25 years. Following this he became the Executive Director of both the New Jersey Academy of Ophthalmology and the Lions Eye Bank.
Funeral services will be held Sunday April 7, 2024 at the Bloomfield Cooper Jewish Chapels,: 44 Wilson Avenue, Manalapan, NJ 07726. This will be followed by his burial at Mount Lebanon Cemetery, 189 Gill Lane, Iselin, NJ 08830.
Shiva will be held Sunday at Marshall Klein's home, 605 Waterside Blvd, Monroe Township, NJ 08831, directly following his services until 7pm and then again on Monday 2pm-5pm.
