Michael Shifman of East Windsor, New Jersey passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 14th at the age of 82. Michael was born in Brooklyn and graduated from The City College of New York. After he married his wife, Rochelle, they eventually moved to East Windsor, New Jersey where he had lived for the past 50 years. Prior to his retirement, he worked for the State of New Jersey.
In the early 1980’s, Michael became a very active and proud volunteer firefighter with the East Windsor Volunteer Fire Co. #2, and then Fire Co. #1. He was a Past President of the Mercer County Firemen’s Association. Michael served his community further as an active member of the East Windsor Democratic Club, on the MUA Board and as a board member of the Avon Village Condominium Association. Most recently, he served as a member of the Mercer County Commission on Abused, Neglected and Missing Children.
Michael was an avid runner, Mets and Jets fan, and had countless friends. He always put his family and friends above himself, and doted on his wife, children and grandchildren. He will be remembered as someone of great humor and kindness.
Michael is predeceased by his mother and father, Joseph and Lillian Shifman of Far Rockaway NY and his brother, Harvey Shifman of Wantagh NY. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Rochelle “Shelly” Shifman, his daughters, Melissa Savoy of Robbinsville, NJ, and Allison Shifman and her husband, Bill Chartier of Hamilton NJ, his twin brother, Steven Shifman of Illinois, formerly of Framingham, Massachusetts, and his grandchildren; Sarah, Devon and Hugh. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral Services will be held at the grave site located at Freehold Jewish Cemetery 164 NJ-33 Business, Freehold, NJ 07728, on Thursday, May 16, 2024 at 11:30 am. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Michael’s memory may be made to: National Volunteer Fire Council Washington DC. www.nvfc.org.
