Nathan was born September 27, 1922 in Bronx, NY. He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 72 years, Harriet Schanen. He is also survived by children Norlyn Kessler and her husband Dennis, Mitchell Schanen and his wife Debra, and daughter-in-law Kerri Schanen. He was predeceased by his dear son Richard. He is also survived by his grandchildren Scott Kessler and his wife Melissa, Todd Kessler, Glenn Kessler, Joshua Schanen, Jordan Schanen and his wife Vanessa, Drew Schanen, Leah Schanen and Mark Schanen. He was eagerly awaiting becoming a great grandfather.
Nathan was born and married in the Bronx before serving overseas in the Second World War as a 1st Lieutenant in the 10th Mountain Division. He moved with his family to Linden, NJ and later to Clearbrook in Monroe Township. Nathan took pride in his work as a photo-retoucher at Art Color in Dunellen, and later in life as a real estate agent.
Nathan led an active life throughout the decades ranging from his many trips with Harriet to St. Maarten, to his love of tennis and golf that had him playing until recently. He was a founding member of Suburban Jewish Center in Linden and was an active resident in the Clearbrook community in Monroe. He was very mechanically inclined and if something was broken he could always find some way to fix it. Cowboy Western movies always brought him great enjoyment, but spending time with his family was his greatest joy.
Funeral services will be held at 1pm on Sunday at the Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, 44 Wilson Avenue, Manalapan. Interment will immediately follow at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Nathan's memory to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
The family will sit shiva Sunday through Thursday from 2-5 and 7-9 pm at the home of Norlyn and Dennis Kessler at 1039 Lovell Place, North Brunswick.
