Norma lived a life defined by extraordinary resilience, deep professional dedication, and a selfless commitment to helping others through some of the most challenging realities life can present.
1. Professional Career as a Dedicated Social Worker
Norma spent her career as a deeply committed social worker across the New York metropolitan area. Her work required a rare combination of empathy, mental toughness, and practical intelligence:
Serving New York City: Navigating the city—from Washington Heights to Coney Island and through the busy, fast-paced environment of the Garment District—she brought vital social services, family support, and advocacy to individuals and working families across every walk of life.
A Career of Service: Her background in social work gave her a sharp, pragmatic understanding of human behavior and systemic challenges. Whether navigating complex public casework or counseling families in need, she dedicated her working life to making a tangible difference in her community.
2. Family Life, Resilience, and Compassion
Norma’s personal journey was woven through love, profound loss, and an unwavering commitment to holding a family together through turbulent times:
Marriages & Homes: Early in life, she shared a home with Henri Fernbach, building a life in Washington Heights and Coney Island. Later, she found a strong life partner in Max Klein, a Hungarian war refugee who brought his own remarkable history of survival and resilience when they settled together in Bayonne, New Jersey.
A Mother’s Heart & Heavy Loss: Raising three children—you (Stephen), Elissa, and Danni—Norma navigated the intense emotional demands of parenthood under extraordinary circumstances:
Elissa: radiant, creative spirit and frankness left a permanent mark on everyone who knew her. Norma and the entire family poured enormous love and attention into caring for Elissa as she fought cystic fibrosis until her passing just shy of her 19th birthday.
Danni: Danni was gifted with brilliant natural intelligence, but faced severe struggles adjusting after college, ultimately wrestling with addiction, depression, and tragedy. Through it all, the enduring love and forgiveness within your family preserved his memory as a beloved son and brother.
Stephen: As her oldest child and the anchor who carried on, you provided a constant source of stability through every chapter of your family's story.
3. A Lasting Legacy
Norma Klein’s legacy lives on through you—as the last surviving member of her immediate family, carrying forward the memories, stories, and spirit of Norma, Henri, Max, Elissa, and Danni. Her lifetime of hard work, combined with her quiet strength through unimaginable heartbreak, reflects the enduring power of family love and human resilience.
