Shirley Batlan, 93, passed away on August 13th at Applewood, a retirement community in Freehold, NJ. She was a resident of Manalapan Township for 43 years. Shirley is predeceased by her beloved husband of 59 years, Julian "Bud" Batlan.
She is survived by her three children and their families: daughter Barbara Massabrook and her husband Thomas, sons Michael and Richard and Richard’s wife Jo-Ann. Her grandchildren Jessica, Nicole and Gabriel, as well as a vast extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins, also survive her.
Shirley was born in Baltimore, Maryland and had been a New Jersey resident since 1950. Shirley went to a secretarial college and as a teenager was a nurse’s aide in Baltimore. She worked with returning wounded soldiers. She also worked as a medical secretary at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.
Shirley worked for US Homes in Freehold for 37 years as an executive secretary for the President. She was a breast cancer survivor for over 20 years. She has been active in various philanthropy groups such as B'Nai Brith and Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Awareness in addition to social groups like the local women's bowling league and her mahjong group.
