August 10, 1936 – August 28, 2019
Sylvia Thurer of Monroe Township, 83, died suddenly on Wednesday, August 28, 2019. Sylvia is preceded in death by her loving husband, Stanley Thurer, along with her son, Stuart Thurer. She is survived by her daughter, Stacey Katz; two sisters, Barbara Benig and Lenore Epstein; four grandchildren, Alexa Rapach, Daniel Katz, Justin and Asher Thurer, along with a great-grandson, Nathaniel Rapach. She is also preceded in death by her son-in-law, Mark Katz, who she lost just ten days prior to her death.
Sylvia was born in Brooklyn to Ida and Alexander Rosen. She grew up living very close to her many cousins and loved her family passionately. She married Stanley in 1958 and they celebrated over fifty years of marriage, renewing their vows on a cruise vacation in 2008. She worked in various administrative roles at Brooklyn College for many years and valued hard work. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother (known in her family as Nana). Prior to moving to Monroe from Brooklyn, her grandchildren would frequently come visit for the weekends and cherished this time with her. She moved to Monroe so that she could be closer to them and they spent many weekends at her house. Along with family time, she enjoyed knitting, reading, and partaking in social events with her friends. She will be sorely missed by her friends and family whose lives she touched.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 30th, graveside, at 11:00am. Shiva will be observed at Stacey's home in Monroe Township from August 30th until September 4th. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to The American Lung Association.
