Born in Newport, New Hampshire on June 29, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Llewellyn and Edna (Hill) Cushing. After graduating from high school, Bessie went on to obtain her Nursing certificate where she proudly served her community as a Nurse for many years. She worked at the Sacred Heart Hospital, the VNA and the Sisters of Holy Cross. In addition to nursing, she enjoyed working with children in foster care, childcare and held a position at Sundial Shoes.
Bessie had many passions in life and after meeting the love of her life Joseph in 1957, the two spent 66 wonderful years together sharing those passions. They treasured their children and loved going camping, visiting the beach, driving up to the mountains, and going on family trips. Bessie claimed Joseph was her very own “G.I. Joe” and they would go for many adventures, such as attending concerts, taking weekend cruises to Nova Scotia and anything that allowed them to enjoy each other’s company.
Bessie loved to read, macrame, crochet, tend to her houseplants, attend church and going dancing at the American Legion. Her life was a gift to many and she will be missed by all who knew her.
Bessie is survived by her beloved husband, Joseph Hickey Sr.; children, Joseph Hickey Jr., John Hickey and Beth Hickey; sisters Elizabeth “Libby” Audette and Brenda Lord; grandchildren, James, Michael, Joshua, Owen, Kenddra and Jacob; great-grandchildren Joey, Aubree, Stella and Alaric and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her two children, baby daughter Pamela and son George Hickey; sisters, Gloria Greenwood and Bernice Cushing; brothers, Llewellyn Cushing Jr., Richard Cushing and Clarence Cushing; and great-granddaughter, Stella.
