Irene J. Demers
February 26, 1923 – March 5, 2018
Irene J. Demers, 95, of Manchester, died March 5, 2018 at St. Teresa Rehabilitation and Nursing Center after a lengthy illness. She was born in Manchester on February 26, 1923 the daughter of Aime and Alma (Marcoux) Lemay and was a lifelong resident of the Queen City. She was educated in the local school system and was a graduate of Manchester West High School.
Following her graduation, she was employed as a sales clerk at J.J. Moreau Hardware and later at LeBlanc’s Hardware. Irene was the consummate housewife and mother whose family was always first and foremost. She was a woman of strong Catholic roots and was a lifetime member of St. Ann’s Sodality of St. Anthony Church. She was also a Cub Scout Den Mother and was the first Girls Scout Troop Leader of St. Augustin Parish. She loved the outdoors especially her time spent hiking New Hampshire’s many mountains and trails with her husband Roland. She also enjoyed traveling and trips to Bar Harbor, Maine with her son Roger and his wife Sue and truly cherished the quiet times spent at the family camp in Rangeley, Maine. She will be fondly remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, daughter, sister and friend.
She was predeceased by her husband of 47 years Roland J. Demers in 1993, her son Roger Demers in 2012 and by her brothers Robert Lemay and Martial Lemay and her sisters Jeanne Sevigny and Madeleine Ahern.
Members of her family include her daughter Elaine Wilk and her husband Joseph of Manchester, her grandchildren Peter and his partner Carly, Jamie and her husband Jeff, Melissa and Jason, her 3 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter, her daughter-in-law Sue Demers as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. Her family would like to thank the staff of St. Teresa Rehabilitation and Nursing Center for the loving care shown to Irene.
There were no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial was be celebrated on Monday March 12 at 10 am at St. Anthony of Padua Church 172 Belmont St. in Manchester. Burial followed in St. Augustin Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations in Irene’s name be made to the Sisters of the Precious Blood Monastery 700 Bridge St. Manchester, NH 03104 or to the charity of one’s choice. The McHugh Funeral Home has been entrusted by the family with her care.
