A New England native, Leo attended the public-school systems and went on to attend the NH College of Accounting and Commerce. Leo was a proud Navy Veteran and while serving in WWll, he was stationed in the European Theatre, beginning in Algiers and working their way up to Italy. Leo met Marilyn, who later joined the Waves, and after the war, they reunited and married. She was the love of his life, and they shared many wonderful adventures together, and raised two beautiful children, Penni and Judi. Upon “retiring,” they delivered lost luggage for the airport and blood for the Red Cross, spending many happy years on the back roads of NH.
Throughout his lifetime, Leo’s career took him into many fascinating positions, such as a butcher, a shoe factory worker, a variety store owner and a delivery man for the Red Cross Leo spent his last seven years, happily, as a resident of Hanover Hill, where he was the self-proclaimed Mayor, greeting visitors at the door whenever he could. Residents and staff alike would enjoy his vibrant energy as he entered the room. When you met him, you could never forget him and he made fast friends with everyone. He enjoyed walks with his best friend Pauly; they would follow it up with singing and a fudgsicle every day. The Honor Flight Organization granted Leo the opportunity of a lifetime to go on an “Honor Flight” to Washington, D.C., where he was overwhelmed with emotion during the entire excursion.
Leo and his daughter Penni were inseparable. They enjoyed doing many activities together at the Hill. They also enjoyed frequent restaurant trips, most especially Billy’s Sports Bar where he would have his favorite, a “cold one.” Another favorite trip was for a chocolate walnut ice cream cone at Goldenrods. Barbecues at Penni’s house were eagerly anticipated, especially for his favorite, an ear of native corn and, of course, a cold one. He will be remembered, always, by all, as an all-around great guy, who lived life to the fullest and brought genuine joy to all who met him. He was known by one and all as a man who embraced life to the fullest.
He is survived by his daughter Wendi “Penni” Murphy and her husband, Charlie of Merrimack, NH; six grandchildren, Cheryl Murphy, Robyn Skilton, Jennifer Bilger, Shannon Murphy, Rachel Lavergne and Sarah Bonneville; eight great-grandchildren, Mike Murphy , Charlie Murphy, Joshua Skilton, Ryan Bilger, Cadence Lavergne, Tyler Lavergne, Benjamin Bonneville and Owen Bonneville; his beloved niece, Sharon Riggs of Hooksett, NH and many loving family and friends.
In addition to his parents, Leo is predeceased by his loving wife, Marilyn Buote and their daughter, Judi Malcolm; and three siblings, Lillian Gain, Eddie Buote and Rita Beauregard.
A celebration of life will be held at Billy’s Sports Bar in Manchester, NH on August 2nd, Tuesday, 2022 at 4:00pm, exactly where he would want friends and family to remember him, share memories and raise a “cold one.” His daughter and son-in-law hope that all friends will stop by and lift a cold one in his memory. His wish was for his ashes to be spread where his beloved wife was so that they could be together in eternity. Above everything, Leo loved LIFE.
