Anthony U. Carrington, Sr. (Tony), 91, of Manchester, NJ, passed away peacefully at home, on February 24, 2023, surrounded by family. He was born on December 2, 1931, in the parish of St. Thomas, Barbados, to Lawrence and Drusilla Carrington. During his early years in Barbados, Tony was a small farmer, avid free diver, and played cricket and soccer; he was also a lifelong sports fan with a passion for cinema and Western films. Tony later trained professionally in the carpentry trade.
After Hurricane Janet struck Barbados in 1955, Tony decided to leave the island and come to the US for better opportunities. He arrived in the US in 1956 and spent the next several years working in central Connecticut in the tobacco industry, where he was promoted to foreman.
While on a visit to New York City, he met the love of his life and Cuban immigrant, Ines. Their love easily overcame a Spanish–English language barrier and married, six months later, in Brooklyn, NY, 1961. Tony and Ines started a family in the Bronx but would later move to Lakewood, NJ in 1971 to settle and raise their family.
Tony worked for Harris, Upham & Co. on Wall St., NYC as a facilities supervisor, Chock Full o’Nuts as a plant operator, and for Toms River Chemical (Ciba Geigy), now known as BASF, as a production operator. After retiring from Ciba in 1988, he continued to work for Central Regional School District in Bayville, NJ before finally retiring in 1998.
Tony and Ines were members of the Spanish Pentecostal Church in Lakewood and then became long-time members of Calvary Lighthouse in Lakewood. He was very active in the church as a member of the choir and as a volunteer in the pantry known as the House of Blessings for many years.
Tony’s infectious laugh would fill any room. His love for family and friends was felt deeply by all who knew him. If you were a Mets, Jets, Knicks, Rangers or Kentucky Derby fan you would definitely have much to talk and laugh about with Tony. Tony would read the Daily News and New York Post daily.
Tony was predeceased by his beautiful wife of 52 years, Ines Carrington and his son Junior Alleyne. He is survived by his loving children; Patricia Carrington Darden (Robert), Anthony U. Carrington, Jr. (Bivia), Jeffrey Carrington, Cheryl Petroski (Paul) and Marcos Carrington (Jovita) and his cherished 11 grandchildren; Anthony, Kyle, Alexander, Darrion, RaeAna, Jacqueline, Selena, Alexis, Mason, Jethro and Jude. Tony is also survived by many relatives and friends. He will be truly missed by all.
