Joseph was born to Rosalee and Joseph Mickens Sr. of East Meadows, New York on February 7, 1942. He was a graduate of Glen Cove school district. Joseph also attended Mississippi State University on a football scholarship (Sports, especially football, always remained a great interest to him).
Shortly thereafter, he enlisted into the United States Army. Joseph served in the Vietnam War where he was awarded several medals including the Purple Heart.
After serving active duty he joined the New Jersey National Guard, serving for 20 years and retiring in 2003 as Sergeant E5. During this time he also worked at 2 guys, Metallurgical, Pathmark, and worked 10 years at Manchester Township Public Works Department before retiring.
Joseph is survived by his wife of 53 years Janice Mickens; son Joseph Mickens III, his daughter in-law Katrina Mickens; son Andrew Peter Mickens; his grandchildren, Joseph IV, Josiah, Jamari Mickens, and Kaylynn Hogan who were the joy of his life. Joseph is predeceased by his parents Rosalee and Joseph Mickens Sr. and his siblings, Franklin Mickens, Elenanor Nesbitt, and Beatrice Greene. He leaves behind to mourn his brothers Albert (Pam), Raymond (Cathy), Richard (Jamie), Calvin, and his sister Wanda Shelton and many nieces and nephews.
Although Joseph is no longer with us he is still in our hearts and his spirit and legacy will live through his family and loved ones.
There will be a visitation for Joseph on Tuesday, January 25th, from 10 am to 12 pm with a service starting at 12 pm at the Anderson and Campbell Funeral Home, 3010 Ridgeway Rd., Manchester and live streamed using the below web link. Burial will follow at 1:30 pm at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, 350 Province Line Rd., Wrightstown, NJ.
