The daughter of John and Mary Gall, Mary was born shortly after her parents arrived in New Jersey from what is now Slovakia. A proud daughter of Garfield, Mary attended Slovak-language schools before graduating from Garfield High School in 1947. After earning a degree in accounting, Mary worked at various businesses in the area, including Bendix Corp.
Mary’s great passions were her family, her Lutheran faith, and her Slovak heritage. She was especially devoted to Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Garfield. Her parents were founding members, among the Slovak immigrants who commissioned the beautiful, high-steepled, gothic-style brick church that remains a landmark of the town. In 2003, Mary retired to Toms River and joined Redeemer Lutheran Church of Manchester.
Mary was a doting aunt to her nieces, grandnieces, and grandnephew. She was a gifted knitter whose work was prized by the many recipients of her afghans, baby blankets, hats, and scarves. She loved telling jokes, reading mysteries, and dining out–especially Italian.
Mary was predeceased by her younger brothers Edward and John. She is survived by her nieces Sarah and Genie, her grandnieces Jane, Julia, and Nora, and grandnephew John.
A viewing will be held on December 27 at 10:30 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11:30 a.m., both at Anderson & Campbell Funeral Home, 3010 Ridgeway Road, Manchester, NJ. Mary will be interred at George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus, NJ.
In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to Redeemer Lutheran Church of Manchester, NJ, and Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church of Garfield, NJ.
